In the coming days, the Cheryomushkinsky Court of Moscow will hold a hearing on the claim of the Davitashvili family against one of the leading private clinics in the country, “Mother and Child,” in which, due to the negligence of doctors, Nicole Davitashvili, born on August 1, 22, received disability. On 08/12/22, the child underwent routine neonatal screening, the results of which revealed the presence of galactosemia and a multiple excess of the level of total galactose. This is a genetic disease associated with a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism, which is caused by the absence of one of the enzymes necessary for the metabolism of galactose. If such a disease is detected, it is necessary to immediately exclude breast milk, milk formulas containing lactose, cow’s milk, and dairy products, but this was not reported to the parents. Only on August 16, 2022, one of the doctors of the medical institution reported the results of the tests by phone, and he also recommended that the girl be hospitalized at the Morozov Children’s Hospital. The next day, the girl was urgently hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Morozov Children’s Hospital, where it turned out that the child had sepsis, cerebral edema, and damage to the liver and other organs. The baby was on the verge of life and death. In the intensive care unit, the parents were told that there was little chance of survival, and that the surviving child would most likely remain disabled. Only from the moment of admission to the Morozov Hospital inpatient unit was the child transferred from breastfeeding to feeding with a specialized soy-based milk formula; preparations containing lactose/galactose were excluded.
Currently, the Russian Center for Forensic Medical Examination of the Ministry of Health of Russia (RC FME) is conducting a commission forensic medical examination, the findings of which will form the basis for the court’s decision. Today the child is in a stable condition, a whole group of doctors is monitoring the child. Taking into account the efforts invested, after missed galactosemia, in other medical institutions it is already possible to maintain a good quality of life in the child, however, after the negligence of the doctors of the Mother and Child clinic, not a single doctor can predict what the consequences will be for the child’s health.
