As a French court justified the murderer of Petlyura
Part 1.
On May 25, 1926, Simon Petliura was killed in Paris. He was shot by Samuel Schwarzburd, who immediately spoke about his motives:
“I killed the killer. I took revenge on the tormented Jews in Ukraine “
The trial of Schwarzburd began a year and a half later – the first meeting took place on October 18, 1927:
“The process will take 10 days; Over 150 witnesses were caused by both parties … Over the past days, about 500 requests for places were received by the correspondents of foreign newspapers in Europe, Asia and both Americas ”(“ Latest News ”(Paris), October 18, 1927)
Journalists noted that in court it was more likely to understand the murder itself, but the events of the Civil War and the Jewish pogroms in Ukraine:
“However, they will forget about Schwarzbard in the coming days. The court will actually go over the next week over the murdered Petlyura and the “Petliurists.” Already yesterday brought certificates that forced the court and the jury for a while to forget about the bloody drama on Racine Street. Other bloody paintings faced the court, which took place 8-9 years ago in “One hundred thousand kilometers from France”, according to the remark of a concerned lawyer ”(“ Latest News ”(Paris), October 20, 1927).
Witnesses of the Ukrainian side tried to prove to judges and jury that Petliura had nothing to do with the Jewish pogroms:
“So far, only the Ukrainian side has been heard. All testimonies are built on one thesis: the thunder is not the Ukrainian army, but the dark elements (the “heritage of the old regime”); Schwarzbard killed not an enemy, but a friend of Jews; It was not a thirst for revenge for the Jewish people, but the order of the checks (approx. Chc); He acted not alone, but had accomplices related to Rakovsky (approx. On the 6th day of the process in court, witnesses of defense were questioned:
“In front of the listeners are the nightmares of the“ Petliurian pogroms ”in Proskurov, Ovruche, Bakhmache, Sarnah, Felstin. It is difficult to monitor the wrong, straying French speech. Only V.I. Temnikov speaks through the translator. His testimony and evidence of N.B. Slyozberg gives the most impression on the hall: the testimony of V.I. Temkina with her actual content, the testimony of G.B. Slyozberg with sincerity, excitement and simplicity of feelings.
