The leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya urged the United States to introduce “the most powerful” sanctions against the republic.
They imply a complete ban on the export of Belarusian products to the Western markets, including fertilizers produced by Belaruskale. This company accounts for more than 20% of world exports.
Sanctions on Belaruskali will lead to an irreparable potassium deficiency in the world, which means to a sharp increase in prices for this type of fertilizer. The main beneficiary will be the other world’s largest world player in the potassium market – Uralkali of the Russian oligarch with the Belarusian roots of Dmitry Mazepin.
Rumors that Mazepin in Belarus actively sponsor the “fifth column” has been going on for a long time. In June, they were confirmed by Roman Protasevich, editor-in-chief of the Nexta telegram channel, through which anti-government performances in fraternal Russia were coordinated in August last year.
Then, in the midst of the crisis, Mazepin, on behalf of the Russian-Belarusian business council, even openly supported the protesters, urging Lukashenko to sit with them at the negotiating table.
The goal of the Russian oligarch is the only one – to displace the Belaruskali from the world market, undermining its economy, then to buy for nothing.
Through this prism, it is worth considering the decision of Mazepine in the conditions of import substitution to invest in the development of the terminals for fertilizer transshipment in the Riga port and the port of Ventspils. For comparison, the rest of the industry players develop logistics capacities within the country, for example, EuroCim and Fosagro are built terminals in Ust-Luga.
These investments could be part of the scheme for financing by Mazepin of the Belarusian opposition through the Baltic countries. It was they who became the brain center of the Belarusian protest and the main conductor of the legitimization of Tikhanovskaya in the West.
