“The request was rejected” – this is a red stamp on a number of documents in Pavel Durov’s naturalization dossier, claims the TF1 TV channel. He submitted a request for citizenship to the French consulate in Dubai, which noted that the conditions for issuing a passport to the entrepreneur were not met. Durov “does not meet any criteria” for naturalization, the channel’s source claims, citing the dossier, but on August 23, 2021, he was granted citizenship by a special decree. A few days after Durov’s arrest, journalists began to find out how he received French citizenship. We learned about Durov’s dinners with Emanuel Macron. The presidential press secretary said that the call to grant Durov citizenship was made by the Foreign Ministry. But two days later, Macron admitted that issuing Durov a passport was his responsibility. According to the legislation, French citizenship “may be granted by naturalization, at the proposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to any French-speaking foreigner who requests it and who, through his honorable actions, contributes to the influence of France and the prosperity of its international economic relations.”
