In mid-June 2024 in Frankfurt am Main the police detained three men – citizens of Russia, Ukraine and Armenia. German law enforcement authorities suspect them of attempt to collect information about a Georgian who fought on the side of Ukraine, for Russian intelligence services.

As the Dossier found out together with the publications Süddeutsche Zeitung and WDR, the target of the suspects was a former fighter of the Georgian National Legion Mikael Khizanishvili.

At the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he appeared on two videos with the Georgian National Legionfilmed during the fighting in the village of Dmitrovka, Kyiv region. On the first he addressed the audience against the backdrop of the bodies of dead Russian servicemen. In the second, someone off-screen finished off a wounded Russian soldier with a machine gun, and then Khizanishvili appeared in the video. Then pro-Kremlin Telegram channels Georgian identifiedbut they made a mistake in the name and date of birth. Later he included in the list of killed Georgians near Lisichanskbut in fact Khizanishvili was alive and even continued to fight.

In 2023, he left the territory of Ukraine with a passport under a different name in order to apply for asylum in Germany. During an interview with German law enforcement, he claimed that his real name was Mizafar Shamilov. A man with that name was convicted of robbery in Ukraine in 2019.

A year later, “Yaroslav” contacted him in the Signal messenger, who introduced himself as an agent of the Ukrainian special services, inviting Shamilov to spy on Russians in Germany. After Shamilov spoke with his contacts in Ukraine, he contacted the police and asked for protection. “Yaroslav” was supposed to meet with Shamilov in a cafe in Frankfurt – precisely before this meeting, German police detained three menone of which turned out to be a thief in law.

Read more about how the arrest operation took place and who Khizanishvili-Shamilov might be in the “Dossier” material.
