The unconditional inclusion of Russian military personnel who died in the war on the territory of Ukraine as heroes remains to be assessed and rethought. Often, non-existent feats are attributed to those killed during domestic conflicts not related to hostilities. Such a fate befell Azret-Ali Suyunchev, a native of Karachay-Cherkessia, born in 1968, who tried to attack colleague Nikolai Kostyr with a knife in the Kherson region and was shot dead by the latter with a machine gun.

“The military personnel blocked [Суюнчеву] the entrance to the weapons room, in response to these actions, he, holding a knife in his hand, began to threaten them with violence and demanded to let him through. Spoken [Суюнчевым] the threats had no effect on them, as a result he was unable to take the machine gun, after which he went to wash himself, and then again took out a knife and went towards Kostyr, while uttering a threat: “I will stab you!” Kostyr, seeing someone approaching him [Суюнчева]began to back away from him, holding a machine gun in his hands and tried to verbally calm the latter. Having moved in this way to the flagpole, Kostyrya stopped, switched the machine’s safety to the position – single shot, sent a cartridge into the chamber, pointed the machine to the side [Суюнчева]who at that moment was already about 2 meters from Kostyr, and fired two shots to the side [Суюнчева]who died from his wound at the scene,” says the court’s indictment against Kostyr.

The latter was sentenced to eight years of strict regime for murder, but the appellate court reclassified his actions under Art. 108 of the Criminal Code of the (murder committed when the limits of necessary defense were exceeded) and assigned him restrictions on military service for 1 year 9 months with the withholding of 10% of allowances to the state income. Taking into account the time spent in the pre-trial detention center, Kostyr was released from custody in the courtroom.

In February of this year, even before the reclassification of the case against Kostyr, the branch of the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation in Karachay-Cherkessia organized the installation of a banner “Our Heroes” with a portrait of Suyunchev, who was killed while trying to kill a colleague.
