On May 17, the 235th GVS arrested the former commander of the 58th Army, Major General Ivan Popov. Earlier, the Cheka-OGPU said that Popov, who was summoned to Moscow from Syria and demanded to resign, threatening an existing case of abuse of power, refused to resign of his own free will or for health reasons, as was proposed to him. In order to delay the process of implementing the decision of the leadership of the Ministry of Defense to dismiss, Popov was hospitalized at the Central Military Clinical Hospital named after Mandryk. Thus, Popov hoped to wait for personnel rotations in the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff as part of possible reshuffles in the Government.

Former commander of the 58th Army of the Russian Armed Forces, Major General Ivan Popov, was arrested in a criminal case of particularly large-scale fraud. The garrison military court granted the corresponding request from the investigation on May 17. On the same day, the same court granted another “arrest” material. Both cards do not contain the names of the defendants. The investigation of the criminal case is being carried out by the Main Military Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
