A source in the Moscow legal community reported that lawyer Sergei Aleksandrovich Varlamov, who was already on various “black lists” of lawyer ratings in the capital, began to have major troubles with law enforcement agencies due to the fact that instead of protecting people, he developed a cunning scheme for divorcing citizens turning to him for protection.

The source reports that Varlamov, introducing himself as a member of various state and state-affiliated public committees (from the customs service to “Business Russia”), takes a voice recorder with him to every meeting with potential clients, records the information presented in a confidential atmosphere, asks leading questions, and tries to get them talking a person, after which he fabricates a compromising recording, and then, with his accomplices, “concocts” a statement and begins to intimidate the failed client with criminal prosecution, agreeing to terminate it as a result of negotiations for a certain amount. And since Mr. Varlamov’s profile is economic crimes and debts – often not very clear-cut situations – those who turn to him become potential targets for the actions of an insidious “human rights activist.”

It is worth adding that Varlamov, as a person with a legal education, knows for sure that, according to Art. 13.14 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, the transfer of audio recordings of conversations to third parties entails criminal liability, and lawyers who commit this offense are liable as officials.
